Buying a new car is a high-stakes decision. Most buyers do it once every 5–7 years, which means limited experience to draw on. Our team at Multi Brand Automotive Hub Pune has guided over 1,000 customers through the process. Here are the mistakes we see most often — and how to avoid every one of them.

Mistake 1: Fixating on Ex-Showroom Price

The ex-showroom price is just the base. On-road costs add 15–20% — registration, insurance, road tax, and dealer handling charges. Always ask for the on-road price quote and compare that, not the headline figure in advertising.

Mistake 2: Not Test Driving in Real Conditions

Dealer test drives are usually short and on smooth roads. Drive in traffic, on broken roads, at highway speeds, and have your family in the car. A car that feels great on a smooth road may vibrate uncomfortably on Pune's potholed roads at speed.

Mistake 3: Buying the Wrong Variant

Many buyers go straight to the top variant because it 'feels complete' — or to the base variant because it's cheapest. Both are often mistakes. The mid-range variant usually offers the best combination of essential features and price. Create a feature comparison matrix before deciding.

Expert Tip

Identify your 5 must-have features. Buy the lowest variant that has all 5. Stop there unless the next variant adds something you'll genuinely use daily.

Mistake 4: Accepting the Dealer's First Quote

Dealers have profit margins and promotional budgets. The first quote is never the best quote. Always negotiate, compare across dealers, and ask for additional value — free accessories, insurance upgrades, or extended warranty. Most dealers have room to give ₹20,000–₹80,000 in value.

Mistake 5: Not Reading the Insurance Fine Print

Dealers bundle insurance as a convenience but often mark it up. The coverage may also lack important add-ons. Compare the same IDV and coverage on an insurance aggregator. You're legally allowed to source insurance independently — don't let the dealer pressure you otherwise.

Mistake 6: Overlooking Waiting Period Implications

Popular models have waiting periods of 2–6 months. Some buyers book, wait 4 months, and then discover the variant or colour isn't available as expected. Get the expected delivery date in writing, compare available stock, and ask whether an eligible car can be sourced within 7 days.

Mistake 7: Ignoring Total Cost of Ownership

Two cars at the same ex-showroom price can have very different 5-year total costs. Fuel efficiency, insurance cost, service frequency, and spare parts availability all matter. A car saving ₹1,000/month in fuel costs ₹60,000 less over 5 years.

Mistake 8: Skipping the Pre-Delivery Inspection

Once you've signed the delivery papers, the car is yours — including any damage or defects. Always do a thorough inspection before signing, in good lighting, with the engine running and all features tested.

Mistake 9: Over-Financing

Taking a 7-year loan to stretch to a more expensive car is a common and costly mistake. Your EMI obligation persists even if your financial situation changes. Keep your EMI within 10–15% of monthly take-home income and choose a tenure of 3–5 years.

Mistake 10: Letting Emotion Override Research

Salespeople are trained to create urgency and emotional connection. 'This colour is the last one', 'price increases next week', 'someone else is interested'. These are sales techniques. Take time. Sleep on the decision. Walk away and come back if needed.
