Buying a used car can save you lakhs compared to buying new — but only if you know what to look for. A bad purchase can cost you more in repairs and paperwork headaches than you saved. Our team at Multi Brand Automotive Hub has inspected thousands of pre-owned cars across Pune. Here are the 15 things we always check.

1. RC (Registration Certificate)

The RC is the most important document. Verify that the name on the RC matches the seller's identity proof. Check the chassis number and engine number on the RC against the physical numbers on the car. Any mismatch is a red flag.

2. Number of Owners

A single-owner car is generally better maintained and less likely to have hidden issues. The RC will show the ownership history. More than two owners on a 4–5 year old car warrants additional scrutiny.

3. Insurance Status

Check if the insurance is valid and whether any claims have been made. Multiple insurance claims often indicate the car has been in accidents. Request the full claim history from the insurer if possible.

4. Challan (Pending Fines)

Check for pending traffic challans on Parivahan.gov.in using the vehicle registration number. Unpaid fines transfer with the vehicle and become your liability after purchase.

5. Loan/Hypothecation Status

Verify whether the car has an active loan. If a hypothecation is listed in the RC, the bank must provide a NOC (No Objection Certificate) before you can transfer ownership. Never pay the full amount without a clear RC.

Expert Tip

Check the RC for any lender name under 'Hypothecation'. If a bank is listed, insist on the original NOC letter.

6. Odometer Reading

An average car covers 12,000–15,000 km per year. A 5-year-old car should have 60,000–75,000 km. Unusually low mileage could indicate odometer tampering — a common practice. Cross-check with service records.

7. Service History

A well-maintained car will have a service book or dealer-stamped records. Regular oil changes and scheduled services indicate a caring owner. Gaps in service history are a warning sign.

8. Body Panel Gaps and Paint

Walk around the car in good lighting. Uneven gaps between panels, mismatched paint shade, or rough texture in specific areas indicate past accident repairs. Run your hand across panels — you'll feel filler if present.

9. Tyre Condition and Wear Pattern

Uneven tyre wear indicates alignment or suspension issues. Check tread depth with a coin. All four tyres should have consistent wear. Check the spare tyre too.

10. Engine and Underbody

Look for oil leaks around the engine. Check under the car for rust or damage. Start the engine when cold — it should start cleanly without excessive smoke. Blue smoke indicates burning oil; white smoke can indicate head gasket issues.

11. Interior Condition

Test every button, knob, and switch. Check AC performance, power windows, music system, and dashboard warning lights. A musty smell could indicate water ingress or flood damage.

12. Test Drive

Drive at city speeds and highway speeds. Listen for rattles, vibrations, or pulling to one side. Test braking — it should be smooth and straight. The gearbox should shift cleanly without grinding.

13. Accident History (Form 35 / VAHAN Check)

Use VAHAN (vahan.parivahan.gov.in) to check blacklisting, ownership records, and registration details. Some third-party services can also pull accident and insurance claim history.

14. NOC from Previous State (if applicable)

If the car was registered in another state, you'll need a No Objection Certificate from the original RTO before re-registering in Maharashtra. This adds time and cost — factor it in.

15. Third-Party Mechanical Inspection

Always get an independent mechanic or a professional inspection service to inspect the car before purchase. This ₹500–₹2,000 investment can save you from a ₹50,000+ repair.

Expert Tip

All cars sourced by Multi Brand Automotive Hub undergo a 150-point inspection by independent mechanics. We share the full report with every buyer.
