A used car's history is its most important asset — or liability. A well-documented service history means the previous owner cared for the car. Accident records reveal structural damage that may never be fully repaired. Here's how to access this information in India.

Service History: What to Look For

  • Service booklet: Most new cars come with a stamped service booklet from the manufacturer's authorised service centres
  • Dealer system records: Authorised dealers have digital records — ask them to run the chassis number
  • Oil change stickers on door jamb or windshield showing dates and mileage
  • Consistency: Regular services every 10,000 km or 6 months indicates good ownership
  • Any major repairs listed — timing chain/belt replacement, gearbox work, clutch replacement

Expert Tip

A car with complete authorised service history is worth ₹20,000–₹50,000 more than one with a gap-filled or missing history. Don't accept 'I serviced it at my local mechanic' without records.

Checking Accident History in India

India lacks a centralised accident database like CARFAX in the US. However, these methods work:

  • Insurance claims history: Ask the seller to request a claims statement from their insurer. Multiple claims indicate multiple accidents
  • Paint thickness scan: Reveals repainted panels — each accident repair leaves evidence
  • Frame/underbody inspection: Bent, welded, or patched chassis rails indicate major accidents
  • Airbag deployment check: If airbags deployed, the car was in a serious accident — check for replacements
  • Symmetry check: Walk 10 metres behind the car — misaligned panels or uneven ride height indicate frame damage

Using VAHAN for Basic History

VAHAN (vahan.parivahan.gov.in) provides basic ownership history, blacklisting status, and registration details. It won't show accident records but will show how many owners the car has had, which is an indirect indicator.

Third-Party Vehicle History Services

Some services aggregate data from insurance companies, RTOs, and dealers:

  • My Car Check (mycarcheck.in): Provides accident, theft, and ownership data
  • Droom History (droom.in): Insurance claim and ownership history
  • Cars24 and Spinny: Both run their own history checks when you list or buy through them
  • CarInfo app: RTO data, insurance check, challan check

Professional Inspection Is the Best Insurance

No online check replaces a physical inspection by an experienced mechanic. A trained eye will catch suspension damage, previous bodywork, and fluid leaks that no database captures. Budget ₹500–₹2,000 for a pre-purchase inspection.
