India's used car market is estimated at over 4 million transactions per year. Unfortunately, a significant percentage involve some form of deception — ranging from minor misrepresentation to outright fraud. At Multi Brand Automotive Hub Pune, we see the aftermath regularly. Here's how to protect yourself.

Scam 1: Odometer Tampering

A car showing 40,000 km that has actually done 1,20,000 km can appear well-maintained and command a higher price. Signs of odometer tampering:

  • Wear on steering wheel, pedals, and seat doesn't match low mileage
  • Service stickers showing higher mileage than the odometer
  • Numbers on digital odometer don't align perfectly
  • OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) scan often shows true engine run time

Expert Tip

An OBD scan costs ₹300–₹500 and reveals the Engine Control Unit's actual operational data — which cannot be easily tampered with unlike the odometer display.

Scam 2: Loan/Hypothecation Cars Sold Without NOC

The seller claims the loan is 'closed' but no NOC has been obtained. You buy the car and receive the RC — which still shows the bank's hypothecation. The bank can legally seize the car. Always verify hypothecation status on VAHAN and insist on the original bank NOC before payment.

Scam 3: Stolen Vehicle with Fake Documents

Stolen vehicles are given cloned registration numbers from similar makes and models. Signs:

  • VIN plate on dashboard looks freshly riveted or replaced
  • Chassis number has been re-stamped (look for uneven font or grinding marks)
  • Seller is unusually eager to close quickly and refuses vehicle history checks
  • Price is significantly below market value

Scam 4: Flood-Damaged or Accident Write-Offs

Severely damaged cars declared write-offs by insurers are sometimes repaired cheaply and resold. Signs of flood damage include musty/mouldy smell in cabin, rust under carpets, water stains on seatbelts and door seals, and corrosion on under-chassis connectors. These cars have compromised electrical systems and safety structures.

Scam 5: Price Too Good to Be True

Online listings at 30–40% below market value are almost always either fraud (fake listings to collect advance payments), salvage vehicles, or theft-related. Cross-reference prices on Cars24, CarDekho, and Spinny before concluding something is a 'deal'.

Scam 6: Advance Payment Before Inspection

Never pay any advance before physically inspecting the car and verifying documents. A legitimate seller has no reason to demand advance payment before you've seen the vehicle.

Scam 7: Fake Dealership or Middlemen

Unregistered 'dealers' operate from temporary setups and disappear after selling problem vehicles. Always deal with established businesses with a physical address, GST registration, and verifiable track record.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Always check VAHAN for ownership, hypothecation, and blacklisting
  • Get an independent mechanic or certified inspection service
  • Verify chassis and engine numbers physically against RC
  • Never pay full amount before RC transfer is complete
  • Use a trusted intermediary like Multi Brand Automotive Hub
